Art has always been a huge part of my life. I think growing up in LA and being surrounded by so much culture and diversity has influenced me greatly. My friends and I would constantly go to modern art museums, like The Broad or MOCA, and spend hours looking at all the creativity shown through the exhibits. Coming into Newhouse, I had no idea what I wanted to major in. Soo many of the majors seemed interesting to me. I was mainly looking at television, radio, and film and graphic design. Movies have a special place in my heart, and I have always loved photography so I definitely saw myself and can still see myself becoming a cinematography. However, a part of me knew that if I was really going to go down that career path I would have wanted to go to an art school instead because the TRF style of filmmaking felt different than VPA filmmaking. After a while, I realized I wanted to be a creative director for a fashion magazine because it encompassed a lot of my passions into one: fashion, photography, and aesthetic building. So that’s what ultimately lead me to pick graphic design as my major. It was so cool to see that other people care about small details (such as kerning) as much as I do when I took GRA 217. And that’s how I knew I was in the right major. I’m so happy to be apart of the MPD department and it just feels like one big family. All the professors have so much to offer and CARE so much for the students. I feel super confident going forward in my career.

So glad to hear you feel at home in MPD and in design, Claudia. You are right that MPD is like a big family, one where everyone cares about one another. I’m really looking forward to helping you get situated here and in our industry. As an FYI, the photo/video side of MPD offers quite a few courses I thin you would enjoy. Let me know if you want to chat, or go visit Bruce. He’d love to talk to you about them, I’m sure. :)
