Hey guys! My name is Jane Depgen and I’m a junior graphic design major with a minor in sociology. I actually just transferred to Cuse last semester and earned credits for GRA217 from my old school (Roger Williams University), which means this is my very first graphic design class at SU! Needless to say, I’m absolutely AMPED.
When I came here last fall, Newhouse and the sheer amount of creative opportunities at this school were super intimidating. Luckily, I forced myself to jump right in. (Turns out, this was a lovely way to combat homesickness and all sorts of #TransferProbs.) So after a crazy fall semester of networking and a slightly pathetic social life, I’m now the Head Designer of 20 Watts Magazine, an interactive designer for BAKED Magazine, and the Art Director for the Fashion & Beauty Communications Milestone (an account team run by TNH, Cuse’s student-run advertising agency).
In terms of my favorite typeface… I definitely go through obsessive phases. But as of right now, if I had to pick a serif? Serifa definitely makes me smile (All hail Adrian Frutiger). Sans serif? Futura was love at first download.
My advice to my classmates would be to get involved in as much as you can while you’re at Syracuse, especially being part of such an amazing program! Transferring was one of the most frustrating, stressful, and terrifying decisions that I’ve ever made but I knew that Newhouse would be the best for me if design is truly what I want to do for the rest of my life (which it totally is). If this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, make it your priority. This field is a 24/7 passion for me because I have an insatiable hunger for learning all things design.
I can’t wait to get to know all of you and create some awesome stuff this semester. Get ready for some long, coffee-filled nights in the Mac labs together! (P.S. I’d be super flattered if you stalked my portfolio site or added me on LinkedIn!)
