Until my sophomore year of high school, I didn’t have the slightest idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I registered for the introduction to journalism course, and that’s when I knew I wanted to go into communications. I started working for the school magazine, and eventually became the Editor-in-Chief my senior year. As a part of the position, I designed the magazine using InDesign. A lot of what I knew about InDesign was self-taught because my advisor didn’t know how to use the software (shout-out to Springfield Public Schools). But once I got the hang of it, I knew that design was something I was very passionate about. What I love most about design is that it can change the entire mood of a piece. Design is everywhere, and without it the world would be a hideous, jumbled mess. Design brings order and contributes greatly to the impact a story or message has on a viewer. In this course, I am hoping to become more comfortable using the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator. I’m also looking forward to building up my portfolio and seeing how far I can push my self on the projects.

I’m super glad you’re in the course, Sam, and I’m looking forward to helping you advance your skills far beyond merely learning to use the software, which is essential, of course, but is merely a tool that will change over time. More important are the principles and strategies, and I’m happy to be coming alongside to walk you through the adventure.
