The trajectory of my career as a design major has been far from conventional. Originally starting out in VPA as an Art Photography major, I always knew that I wanted to make the move to Newhouse. After completing my first year, I was able to do this, and accordingly transferred into Newhouse, where I found myself in the Magazine department. Having always wanted to design editorial spreads, I thought that ‘magazine’ was the correct major to learn how to do so. Thanks to my COM 117 professor, I was made aware of the fact that I was mistaken and accordingly so, in the wrong major. Once I found out that MPD was a program within Newhouse I immediately switched to graphic design and have been pleased ever since. I love design because of the valuable skills that I’ve been acquiring through my education. I think that when you graduate being able to have a specific skill set to bring with you is pivotal. What I love most about design however, is the way that it infiltrates every single aspect of our lives and we don’t even realize. Since I’ve become a design student, I’ve begun to see the world in a whole new perspective that has made me critical, yet extremely appreciative for all the work of designers. I realize now that at the beginning of this course I really had no idea what to expect. I knew that it was the first class as a design major and therefore would be intense. I think that I was expecting to obviously learn about type, but I don’t think I realized how much this class would push me, but I’m extremely grateful that it has.
