Hey guys! Hope you’re all excited for your first course as a class of designers! My name is Jenna, and by the time you read this, I’ll be a junior who took 437 an entire year ago. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of this semester:
- Create things you love. This class is a lot of work, not going to lie, but that work will seem less like work if you relate each project to something you’re passionate about. As the course progresses, you’ll have more freedom to choose your approach to each assignment, so take the opportunity to be creative, instead of just coming up with something that you think will get a good grade.
- Take advantage of the bonus events that occur throughout the semester. Waking up earlier than noon on a weekend isn’t the greatest, but I got to see and do some pretty cool things (and occasionally get some free stuff) during these events. Plus they’re a good way to bond with your classmates.
- Don’t be afraid to break the rules. In 217, you probably learned that grids are the best thing since sliced bread and that using drop shadows is a crime against humanity (or something along those lines). I’m not saying to set an entire project in lime green Comic Sans, but sometimes you might need to think outside the box.
Hope you all have a great time in 437!
